Click the link below to download a .zip file with some photographs of Bill Bailie, taken by John and Jospehine at Hostellers Sailing Club (HSC) events over the years.
The oldest of these photographs was from 1976, the time when Bill was reglarly sailing with HSC member Geoff Giles on the 18 foot clinker built gaff rigged sloop 'Cetus'. In this picture Bill is steering the boat and Geoff is sitting just forward. This was almost certainly taken in the river Blackwater. The boat behind is the Wayfarer sailing dinghy 'Merganser' which has been owned by the HSC for a very long time - this boat is still in service with the HSC today but covid preventing us sailing it in 2020. In this picture I think the lady sailing 'Merganser' is Diana Lee, nee Diana Freeman, I am not sure who the other occpants are. Bill rarely if ever went sailing after Geoff Giles sold Cetus.
Most of the other pictures are from HSC winter walking weekends. Bill rarely joined HSC trips that required staying away from home so most of these photographs were taken in Hertforshire and many of them are from the New Year Day rambles that Geoff Giles arranged for the HSC for many years. The exceptions are one picture taken at Tanners Hatch Youth Hostel in Surrey in autumn 2002 and a few pictures taken at Clyffe Pypard Youth Hostel near Swindon in 2008. Cliffe Pypard hostel existed for only a couple of years or so, it is now closed.
